What we often fail to recognize is that all behavior (even when it seems bad for us) makes sense and performs some useful function if we understood what we are really getting psychologically from it. Our ‘bad’ behavior is good for us in some way. Therefore, attempting to change a behavior - without putting something in its place - tends to leave us with a gap in our tool set for coping with the world so we tend to revert to the status quo. Change is hard.
